Hey, believe it or not, I have raced NYS time trials several times,
one time making it to the podium in the retrogrouch category. I have
a NY State Time Trial Championship beer mug to prove it. Though I
did meet the requirements (wool socks, standard wheelset, no aero), I
was wondering how my titanium frame and Dura-Ace STI could qualify as
retro. As I recall the two who came in ahead of me were riding
vintage lugged steel frames with downtube-shiftered components. Of
course they were twenty or so years younger than me. I had the
vintage body.

On the fun scale, time trialing ranks somewhere down in the
negatives. What I'm really looking forward to is some mass start
strategy and team work, something along the lines of helping usher
Jeff Maximiek along the flats and rollers thoroughly protected from
headwinds and cross winds to the bottom of the big climb in good
shape to take the KOM.

We did do some TT work on Wednesday evenings a couple years back in
prep for the Elmirathon. My current favorite course is the long
steady climb from Fitch's bridge to Caton on Hendy Creek, which can
then finish with a group ride, but there are probably other long stop
sign-less stretches we could make use of if we're willing to ride out
to them. For instance, Lowman to O'Brien's, or the full length of
Wyncoop Creek Road, or top of Jerusalem Hill to the top of the
Federal Road. Ride out together to the start by way of warm up, then
send the slower riders off first, faster riders last, riders
responsible to self-time (bring your own stopwatch; yes, there is
such a thing as good sportsmanship and honesty among cyclists), then
regroup at the end and ride back. Hey, maybe time trialing can be
fun! Can't wait to give it another go.

In the meantime I will take my training regimen forward a step this
evening, and slug down a couple pints of the black stuff at
Horigan's, either in celebration if the good guys win the election,
or in confirmation of the merits of apathy if the bad guys win. I
guess either way, I win.

They have a retrogrouch category ( I am not making this up)
Retrogrouch riders must have 32 spokes per wheel, no aero bars, and
one
item of wool clothing
Good news for you and your anorexia diet. Guinness is not only low in
alcohol, guinness has as few calories as light beer!
