This is about League of American Bicyclists' course being given at
Cornell. Three sessions starting 4/24.
Well worth considering, and even if you don't plan to attend
yourself, you might want to circulate the word to other potential
participants.

Subject: FLCC> Bike skills course
With the warmer weather of these past few days, you might be giving
thought to springtime activities, like riding your bike. To that
extent, this is to announce this year's annual cycling skills course,
is scheduled to begin on April 24th.
The nine hour course is designed to provide a friendly environment
for individuals with a wide range of cycling abilities. Whether
you're just getting back into cycling and not feeling comfortable
with bicycling in traffic or you're a regular cyclist interested in
becoming more proficient, there's room for you in this course.
We'll discuss some of the common myths about the "dangers of cycling"
and you'll be introduced to some basic bike handling skills and
traffic strategies you can employ to make your cycling experience
safer and more enjoyable. You'll be exposed to a wide range of
information including equipment and gear, crash types, and vehicular
cycling principles (how to ride in traffic). We will spend some time
in a classroom and you'll practice handling skills a parking lot.
You'll have practice with traffic on streets as each class will
include a short on-street bike ride.
The first class will be on April 24th; session 2 will be held on May
1. For session 3, you'll have a choice of either May 8 or May 15.
Class will be held from 5-8PM. We'll meet in a basement classroom of
Riley Robb Hall, room B-15 (south west end of the building). All
participants must have their own multi-geared bicycle, appropriate
clothing and helmet. Bring a snack, as we won't be taking a dinner
break (although bananas are generally available). Cost for the course
is $25 which includes a copy of the student manual. Participants must
be 16 years of age or older.
At the end of the course, successful participants (a 25 question exam
and road test) will be officially certified as League Cyclists (this
program is sponsored by the League of American Bicyclists-
www.bikeleague.org )
Let me know if you're interested and have any questions or would like
to reserve a spot in the class. Size is limited due to our need to
control the instructor/student ratio.
The instructors are Sue Powell and Lois Chaplin. Both are Cornell
staff members certified with the League of American Bicyclists as
cycling instructors.
