As an aging yet very actve athlete I want to offer this..sit ups are 
one of the most worthless, time wasting exercises that you can do. They 
place so much strain on the lower back, thighs and hips without placing 
an emphasis on what you are trying to accomlish..building strength in 
the abs. Crunches, leg raises, especially hanging leg raises from a 
pullup bar and doing knee ups from a pull up bar allow you to 
concentrate the movements on the abs without straining the lower back...
consult any body building info that you can find and I am sure you will 
find the same .. I have been an avid weight lifter and endurance 
athlete for the past 30+ years..including long distance running and 
cycling..check out ab originals..a device that allows you to hang from 
a bar supported by your arms that allow you to utilize you effort 
without taxing your grip and arm strength..they work  !! Just offering
