I am taking the liberty of sending you this email in the hopes that your organization will help us to market our event to your members:
Registration is open on our web site (www.bikesyracuse.org) for "24 Hours of b.i.k.e.-Syracuse". This event is scheduled in the hopes of raising money for b.i.k.e.-Syracuse, a non-profit, 501 (c)(3) "inner-city bike club" that mentors children from the ages of 8-14. We are raising money to provide meals for the children during our Saturday meetings/rides and buy better biking equipment for the children. We use the bikes as transportation to different events in and around the City, Many of these children have never been outside of their neighborhood, let alone into the woods on a bike or in other areas in and around the City. The money raised will enable b.i.k.e.-Syracuse to get the children out of the inner-city out to parks and events (museums, theater, camping trips, bike races to name a few) in and around Central and Northern New York and provide meals to children and their families.
I was told by the Community Services Department at SU that the South West side of Syracuse where this event will take place is the poorest neighborhood in the Country with all things considered equal...(based upon a demographic study completed by SU). We are using bikes as a way to keep kids in school (we work with the Syracuse School District)...to challenge them and their fears.....we have found that bikes are an outlet both emotionally and physically for the children. The bikes build their confidence and physically, it enables them to get out of their neighborhood for a few hours every Saturday and see all the great sights that we have in and around this City.
"The 24 Hours of b.i.k.e.-Syracuse" will take place on June 9th and 10th. It is a 20 or 10 mile loop (rider's choice) around the City of Syracuse. The event is sponsored by Hartford Insurance Company, the Syracuse City Parks and Rec Department and City Police...safety is our main concern for all bikers..the route will be monitored by City Police and Probation Officers during the evening hours. The goal is to keep riding for 24 hours Saturday at 2:00 p.m. - Sunday at 2:00 p.m
Tents will be allowed to be set up in a secure area of Skiddy Park located on Oswego Street for riders' rest. Food is available at the event and entertainment will be provided. There are prizes for the individual with the most laps completed in the 24 hours, and for the individual with the most donations. There will also be prizes for the Team with the most laps in the 24 hours and the most donations. Riders can ride as individuals or in Teams. We are hoping for at least 50 riders but can accommodate as many as 200.
Please check out our web site for all the details and registration for the event. www.bikesyracuse.org Also, here is an electronic version of the newspaper article that ran in Sunday's paper about the event:
