This may well be worth four trips to Ithaca.

Bike skills class

The nine hour course is designed to provide a friendly environment for
individuals interested in improving their bicycling skills and
confidence.
Whether you're just getting back into cycling and not feeling
comfortable
with bicycling in traffic or you're a regular cyclist interested in
becoming
more proficient, there's room for you in this course.
We'll discuss some of the common myths about the "dangers of cycling"
and
you'll be introduced to some bike handling skills and traffic
strategies you
can employ to make your cycling experience safer and more enjoyable.
You'll
be exposed to a wide range of information including equipment and gear,
crash types, and vehicular cycling principles (how to ride in
traffic). We
will spend some time in a classroom and you'll practice handling
skills in a
parking lot. You'll have practice with traffic on streets as each
class will
include an on-street bike ride. You'll get a great book about bicycling!

The first session will be on Tuesday September 9th and Thursday
September
11th (you select one); session 2 will be held on Tuesday September
16th and
session 3 will be on Tuesday September 23rd. Class will be held from
5-8PM.
We'll meet in a classroom of Riley Robb Hall, room B-15 (south west
end of
the building) on the Cornell campus.
All participants must have their own multi-geared bicycle, appropriate
clothing and helmet. Bring a snack, as we won't be taking a dinner break
(although bananas are generally available). Cost for the course is
$25 which
includes a copy of the student manual and a free gift for all who
finish the
course. Participants must be 16 years of age or older.

At the end of the course, successful participants (a 30 question exam
and
road test) will be officially certified as League Cyclists (this
program is
sponsored by the League of American Bicyclists- www.bikeleague.org ).
Not
everyone is interested in taking the test and we do not pressure
anyone. For
some, the structured hands-on lessons and practice time are the best
part.

Let me know if you're interested and have any questions or would like to
reserve a spot in the class. Size is limited due to our need to
control the
instructor/student ratio. A completed registration form (available upon
request) and a check for $25 made payable to Cornell University will
hold
your space in the class.

The instructors are Sue Powell and Lois Chaplin. They are certified
with the
League of American Bicyclists as cycling instructors.
