Learn About Elections at the Summit
Attend the 2008 <http://www.bikeleague.org/conferences/summit08/index.php> National Bike Summit (EARLY REGISTRATION DEADLINE <https://www.bikeleague.org/cogs/summit/signup> : FEBRUARY 5!) to learn more on how you can impact the national elections.
The Congressional elections of 2008 provide a great opportunity to educate national leaders on the importance of developing a national bicycling strategy. The Summit will provide valuable insight on what we in the bicycling community can do to get bike issues on the candidate's platforms. Discussions will include; reaching out to the media; candidate surveys; volunteering on campaigns, what non-profit organizations can and cannot do.
The League co-hosted a Presidential Candidates' Forum on Transportation & Infrastructure on January 31, 2008. The forum was hosted by The NYU Wagner Rudin Center for Transportation Policy & Management.
Presidential candidates from both parties were invited to participate but the only candidates represented were Senators Obama, Clinton and Gravel as well as Representative Kucinich (still on the ballot in New York).
The forum was a great opportunity to hear from the campaigns on their views in regards to the role bicycling should play in our national transportation system. Overall, each believes that as a nation we must fundamentally change the way we look at transporation policy and how it impacts other national policies such as health, energy, environment, economy. They all agree that integrating land use and providing alternative transportation options such as walking and bicycling must be a key component to any integrated system and that bicycle projects should indeed be funded in part by federal transportation dollars.
Mayor Bloomberg AcceptS BFC Designation from the League
BFc Program a Focal Point of Summit
New York's efforts to increase bike resources and facilities city-wide were recognized today by the League. Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and Department of Transportation Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan today accepted the bronze-level Bicycle Friendly Community (BFC) Award from the League of American Bicyclists during a meeting at City Hall. Mayor Bloomberg and Andy Clarke <http://www.bikeleague.org/images/bloomberg_clarke.jpg> The award recognizes New York's commitment to improving conditions for bicycling and its investment in bicycling programs and facilities. The number of cyclists in New York has grown by an estimated 75 percent since 2000 and New York is in the midst of an ambitious plan to make all five boroughs more bike friendly. BFC judges were particularly impressed with what was described as "the most thorough crash analysis of any city in the country." The New York City DOT, in conjunction with the Departments of Health, Parks and the Police Department, completed a comprehensive analysis of all cyclist fatalities and serious injuries during the previous ten years. To learn more about the BFC program <http://www.bikeleague.org/programs/communities/> , attend the National <http://www.bikeleague.org/conferences/summit08/index.php> Bike Summit!
