While in Indy, I was able to get a couple of days riding in, but did anyone
but me get out to get rid of the alcohol left in my system?
Hey, logging your distances on bikejournal.com is a lot of fun! As of
yesterday we were #81 as an organization.

I had a wonderful ride on the CompuTrainer the day before. It was very
scenic - concrete basement walls, the freezer, and even a glimpse of the
cat's litter box if I turned my head.
Familial obligations during the holidays severely constrains outdoor
mileage.
Happy New Year!

One brave soul (myself) ended up riding with about 60 other cyclists
starting from the Lehigh County Velodrome yesterday at 10AM. Included in
the pack was the winner of the Chris Thater Memorial pro race (and the USA
Crit Series in general, I think), Kyle Walmsley from the Navigators
Insurance team. The first part of the ride was a nice comfortable pace,
but on the way back, all bets were off. It was all that I could do to not
get dropped with the furious pace, but I held on for all but the last mile
where the sprints were taking place. I have a great idea where I am
fitness-wise after this 35-mile ride. I'm feeling great and am motivated
as hell to start this upcoming season. Glad to hear that some of the 2008
race team are putting in the miles and getting ready. The rest of you, I
don't know.... Maybe you just need to get on the bike and get that feeling
of freedom and the pedals turning in that smooth cycle again.

Three brave souls rode Bird Creek yesterday, myself, Ryan, and Jeremy,
seeing the three inches of snow on the ground this morning makes me think
we picked the right day. I know the rest of you weren't available on
Sunday and were thinking of riding today or tomorrow, and oh darn the snow
just closed that window of opportunity. Yesterdays ride was beautiful and
relatively easy. Jeremy wanted to do Bird Creek so we could talk as we
climbed the hill. The day I can chat and climb Bird Creek in January is
the day I get....... well you know what I mean. I'm always happy just to
get to the top of Bird Creek. It was warm enough yesterday I climbed
without my jacket and my hat, should of taken my gloves off too. Here are
some words to inspire you as we slide towards Spring from one of my
favorite blogs Ready to Ride
"There are lots of riders who find it easy and natural to ride their bikes
year round. You may be one of them. But if you are like the majority of
road cyclists who enjoy riding for fitness and recreation, then riding
through the winter may turn something you do for fun into a chore. As it is
with any pursuit, when it stops being fun, you stop doing it.
Cycling is a sport that requires aerobic fitness and strength. The extent
that you draw on either is directly related to the roads you want to ride.
More challenging roads offer more of what cyclists dream about, like a thin
black-topped line slicing through wheat fields as far as the eye can see;
or a forest service road rising up and over a snow-capped mountain pass; or
a long and winding down-hill grade, high above a lonely stretch of the
coast line.
But it isn't scenes like these that make it difficult to ride the bike in
winter. For riders who live north of the 45th parallel, it is freezing
temperatures, rain, and snow that make riding uninviting.
The payback loop is just so much longer in winter. In spring and summer,
you can put in some hammer time on Tuesday and Thursday and feel the
benefits on Saturday. In winter, it can be weeks or months before you reap
the rewards of those long hours on the trainer or in spin class.
The good news is, the Winter Solstice has passed. The days are getting
longer, have you noticed? Springtime may seem like a long way off, but in
fact, it is just around the corner.
The benefit of building a base level of fitness now and increasing it
slowly over the next couple of months could mean the difference between
enjoying that first long ride in March, or struggling to keep up as your
lungs burn and your legs ache as your friends disappear on the road up in
front of you."
Happy New Year to everyone! Hope to see you at Dana's benefit next
Saturday.
I'm going skiing today
Bobby
