Bicycle Friendly State Deadline: This Friday!

This Friday, July 11, is the first-ever deadline for the Bicycle Friendly State<http://www.bikeleague.org/programs/bicyclefriendlystate/> Ranking Questionnaire. The League's Bicycle Friendly Community program has expanded in 2008, and this year we are ranking the states in bicycle friendliness. The League has established standardized criteria, and now the bicycle coordinators of all 50 states are filling out the online questionnaire. Make sure your state bicycle coordinator is aware of the program and is answering the questionnaire! Rankings will be released in September in Seattle at Pro Bike/Pro Walk<http://www.bikewalk.org/2008conference/index.html>. Starting to Solve the Fuel Crisis ...

Congressman Earl Blumenauer (D-Ore.)<http://blumenauer.house.gov/> has announced his proposal for immediately reducing the impact of rising gas prices. Rep Blumenauer’s bill will have the federal government invest in communities, transportation choices, and affordable location-efficient housing. “Gas prices have shot up by more than a dollar a gallon in the last few months,” said Congressman Blumenauer. “As much as we all want a simple solution to the complex energy puzzle, there is no silver bullet. One thing we can do now is give people more choices. My proposal includes everything from offering a tax credit for carpooling to helping transit agencies cope with rising fuel prices and demand by funding fare subsidies, service improvements, fuel purchases, and technology assistance. Blumenauer is a longtime advocate and supporter of bicycling.

Speak Up for Federal Bicycle Research

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) seeks suggestions from bicycling and pedestrian professionals<http://knowledge.fhwa.dot.gov/cops/step.nsf/home/>, as well as advocates, in regards to lines of research that should be pursued within the Bicycle/Pedestrian and Health topic area of the 2009 Surface Transportation Environment and Planning Cooperative Research Program (STEP). STEP, established in the last transportation bill, provides research funding for FHWA to better understand the relationship between surface transportation, planning and the environment. Non-motorized transportation (i.e., Bicycle /Pedestrian and Health) is a specific area emphasized in the STEP. This is a great opportunity to demonstrate to the leadership at the Department of Transportation (USDOT) and FHWA that there is great interest from bicycle/pedestrian stakeholders in advancing national initiatives to ensure greater federal investment in transportation infrastructure and that expanding funding for bicycling programs is necessary and appropriate. Bicycle Resolution Co-Signed by Many Mayors

On Monday, June 23, the U.S. Conference of Mayors adopted resolution “Ensuring Bicycling Is Integrated into National Transportation, Climate, Energy and Health Policy Initiatives<http://www.usmayors.org/usmayornewspaper/documents/06_16_08/pg7_res_chhs.asp>” as Conference policy. Interbike to Remain in Las Vegas

After two years of collecting potential host city data and retailer, manufacturer and industry partner feedback, Interbike<http://www.interbike.com/ib/index.jsp> management has announced the trade show will remain in Las Vegas, and that they are currently finalizing an agreement with the Sands Expo and Convention Center to host the industry's show for a minimum of three more years, beginning with the 2010 show. “The decision to keep the Interbike show in Vegas comes after years of research and communication with our retailer attendees, exhibiting manufacturers and important industry partners,” said Lance Camisasca, Interbike's industry consultant.

Adventure Cycling Association<http://www.adventurecycling.org/> is seeking nominations for three of their four annual bicycle travel awards that celebrate the heroes of bicycle travel in the U.S. Nominees are sought for the June Curry Trail Angel Award, the Pacesetter Bicycle Travel Award, and the Sam Braxton Bike Shop Award. The fourth, Adventure Cycling's Volunteer of the Year Award, is selected directly by the organization. Nominations for 2008 awards are open July 1 through September 30, 2008.
