[BHV] Is the NY State Senate nuts?

I just hope the "other" business involved doesn't decide to just use
this as an opportunity to rape and pillage! I think I heard on the news
that there isn't a mandate for the gas companies to pass along the
"savings". So in theory the local Sunoco could just keep the prices the
same and fill their pockets with the "savings".
And what happens at the end of the summer when the re-instate the taxes
and we all crap ourselves when the price of gas jumps $1 in a day?
Also don't farmers get off-road diesel that doesn't include the same
taxes? So this bill would not affect that very much?

Bill,
Part of me agrees, but the one area that every one is forgetting about
are two businesses that are really getting hurt even more than us normal
drivers.
1. Truck drivers, yes even though the tend to scare the _____ out of
us, are really being put under pressure to pay for gas. Many of the
independent drivers are not being able to make ends meet.
2. Farmers - It seems like they are getting blamed for causing food
prices to go up, but in reality, they are getting hit harder than us
too. Without the gas, they would never be able to plow and work the
fields, and there are no hybrid tractors. (This is speaking from a
farmer background) My own brother had to give up his farm recently.
These two businesses really do need a break of some kind!

"Yes," is probably the charitable answer. We can think of other
things to call them. "Panderers," "Snake oil salesmen," are high on
the list.
Yesterday, 5/7/08, the New York State Senate passed a bill, S7594-B,
suspending state gasoline/motor fuel taxes Memorial Day through Labor
Day.
We can leave it to the economists to discuss the impact of this bill
with respect to the potential for increased demand and consumption of
motor fuel, increase in cost, increased dependence on imported oil,
etc, etc.
>From our perspective as cyclists, it looks like exactly the wrong
way to go. More, bigger, cars squeezing us off the roads; less money
for roadways; more pot holes, cracks, and broken pavement; and the
waste of an opportunity to let the market, for once, work its so-
called magic in the right direction.
Can anyone find a roll call for the Senate vote? In the meantime,
here's a summary of the homework they did, before passing the bill, from
http://public.leginfo.state.ny.us/menugetf.cgi
"FISCAL IMPLICATIONS:
"To be determined.
"LOCAL FISCAL IMPLICATIONS:
"To be determined."
Bread and circuses, anyone?
Hopefully better sense will prevail in the Assembly and the
Governor's office.
You can help them on that front:
