Subject: Grant Davis

Most of you have heard by now that Grant Davis was involved in a tragic
bicycle accident yesterday morning. He was riding solo on Oracle, north of
Rancho Vistoso, when he ran into the back of a vehicle who's driver had
parked on the side of the road. Grant apparently had his head down and ran
into the back of the vehicle. He was initially responsive then blacked out,
stopped breathing, and his heart stopped beating. He was given CPR at the
scene, then transferred by helicopter to UMC where he was found to have a
broken neck (C3,4,&5). He underwent emergent spine surgery to decompress his
spinal cord and stabilize his neck. He is now intubated, on a breathing
machine, and in the intensive care unit at UMC. His prognosis is very
guarded at this point. At this time there's no way to know his outcome but
he may have significant paralysis, possibly need to be on a ventilator for
an extended period of time.

At this point he has all the appropriate medical care necessary. Stuart and
Carmel (Grants mom and dad) wanted me to send this email. We all know what a
fighter Grant is and now he's fighting for his life.

What Grant (and his family) needs most right now are our
prayers..........truly.

Please forward this to those you love so they can help.

Joel

*Oro** **Valley** crash badly hurts bicyclist *

*ARIZONA** DAILY STAR *

A teenager was seriously hurt Wednesday morning when the bicycle he was
riding slammed into the back of a parked trailer in Oro Valley .

The teen was northbound on North Oracle Road, about one-quarter of a mile
north of Rancho Vistoso Boulevard, at about 7:30 a.m. when he struck a
parked trailer on the shoulder, said Liz Wright, an Oro Valley Police
Department spokeswoman.

The trailer was being towed by a pickup truck that had pulled over and
turned on its emergency hazard lights, Wright said.

Witnesses said the teen had his head down and didn't see the trailer, she
said.

The teen was flown to a hospital with life-threatening injuries, Wright
said. He was wearing a helmet, she said.

The teen's name had not been released.

No citations were expected to be issued, Wright said.

*THE VERY SAD ENDING TO THE STORY*

Last night (Sunday, July 2 @ 7:00 pm ) I, Richard Debernardis, stopped by
to see Grant's parents at University Medical Center (UMC). While Grant was
still lying there in a comma, Stu, Grant's Dad, told me that the doctors
told him that the damage to Grant's brain was excessive and Grant would not
be able to survive. Stuart and his wife, Carmel, along with their other 5
children, made plans to donate 15 different organs (from Grant) to 15
different people so their lives may continue.

The family is beginning to plan a "celebration of life" for Grant this
coming Saturday. When I find out the details, I will send one last e-mail
to everyone. In the meantime, I personally ask your support in one of four
ways:

 (1) Attend the "celebration of life" ceremony in support of the family,
who have survived on the love, prayers and attention given to them this
week. They are so appreciative of everyone's concern and expression of love
and support.

(2) Send me an e-mail of support by Thursday, July 6, 2005 , to the "Grant
Davis Family" and I will compile them in a binder and present the binder to
the family next week.

(3) Keep the family in your prayers for the hard days are ahead

(4) Pass this e-mail around to the cycling community

Grant's a remarkable young cyclist, at the age of 16, he finished the 2005
109-mile El Tour de Tucson in 40th place with a time of 4:22 ... Thank you,
Grant, for being part of our life. You will not be forgotten.
