It's that time of year again when the mornings are cold and the days are
getting shorter and we all start to think about alternate forms of
training. What are you going to do in the off season to build the solid
base of strength and skills which will take you to the next level next
season ? It's never too soon to start that training program......

Whether it's climbing a big hill, or holding your position in a crazy
field sprint, it helps to have a good strong and solid upper body. What
good are those expensive oversize carbon handlebars if you don't have the
strength and mass to flex 'em ? You know the only thing keeping Amanda
Shenstone from winning the sprints in the men's A race on Tuesday nights is
that wimpy upper body of hers. Since the crackdown on drug use has derailed
her plans to correct that shortcoming using steroids, she has decided to go
with the Three S's Upper Body Conditioning Plan for the upcoming season.
And since Amanda isn't the only one around here that could use a little
upper body enhancement, we have decided to offer the introduction to the 3
S's training program to everyone, with a free clinic to be held at Swan
Cycles on Saturday October 28, starting at 9:30 AM. Materials will be
provided for all participants.

Many of you will recognize that this clinic has been offered numerous
times in the past. The skills you will hone at this clinic are timeless,
and can always be further refined, so you will find many of the same people
participating in the clinic year after year, and these include many of the
best cyclists (of all disciplines) that Ithaca has to offer. There are
numerous different "skill stations", and participants will be encouraged to
try several of them during the course of the day's activities. Along with
the physical training, there is an emphasis on teamwork, psychology, and
nutrition.

This clinic is approved by the UCSF* coaching program, and will provide
all participants with valuable upgrade points for their annual license status.

So plan to set aside some time for the annual Sawing Splitting, and
Stacking (3 S's) activity at Swan Cycles Saturday Oct. 28 starting anytime
after 9:30AM. Marcia will be making the giant pot 'o chili, mac and
cheese, and cookies. Liquid refreshments will be provided, as will work
gloves and hearing protection. Most tools will be provided, though extra
chainsaws, splitting mauls, and personal protection devices are welcomed.
