Hey FLCC'ers,
(Sorry for the delay on this. the list rejected my email address the first
time around.)
Thanks everyone who sent emails asking me if I was alright after my accident
last week. I knew there was a reason I missed Ithaca. Since so many of you
emailed, I thought I should send a follow-up to the list.
Not that I would like to repeat this experience, but it actually did
re-affirm my faith in people. Short version of what happened. I was riding
down State after the Tuesday night and a driver coming up State made a
left-hand turn right into me. I went over her car and landed hard on the
curb. My fork was broken and front wheel was banged up but fortunately the
bike was alright. My body was pretty banged up, but so far it also doesn't
need replacement. The driver was remarkably nice and apologetic. The only
real dark side of the incident was the fact that the police officer wrote me
a ticket for not having a light and was generally pretty rude to me. That
was definitely offset by LiLynn's generosity to sit there in the rain for an
hour and give me a lift home when it was all said and done (thanks LiLynn!)
That night, Glen was kind enough to stay up late and get my bike working
again. The next day I had my court hearing over the ticket. I prepared a
pretty good defense and was actually disappointed when the prosecutor threw
out my ticket after my first sentence. New York State law says that a light
is not required until 30 minutes after sunset. At the time that the officer
wrote me the ticket (which was well after the incident,) I was still not
legally required to have a light. The court was thankfully quick to say it
wasn't my fault.
Since the driver had been so kind, I had decided not to pursue anything over
a fork and wheel. However, about an hour later I got a call from the
driver's insurance company. She had called them the night before and taken
full blame for the incident. They were happy to pay for the fork and wheel
(they even offered a few hundred for pain and hardship, but I was happy with
just covering the repairs.)
So that's the sum of it. Thanks again for all the emails. Overall, it went
pretty well considering what could have happened.
Trevor
