It is only two weeks to the best free century in the Finger Lakes featuring
5 Lakes and a steak!
Please remember to rsvp for dinner at the Rooster. They just want an idea
of how much beer they should brew for us. :)
You do the ride or not that's your choice. Drinking beer and having fun we
take seriously in this club. Here is a repeat of the announcement for
all who missed it.
Ride strong

Big Horn Velo is proud to announce our Annual Five Lakes and Steak Ride
has been scheduled for Sunday September 24th 2006. This ride comes in
century and half century flavors.
We rode the 5 Lakes Century Route last Sunday on the FLCC's Keuka Lake
tour last Sunday (8-13-06) and it is a beautiful route that starts at
the Marina in Watkins Glen on the shores of Seneca, goes along the shore
of Lamoka, passes Waneta and Bradford pond and then goes along the west
of Keuka. We added the Hamondsport to Branchport Hilly option.
Beautiful views but one is tempted to stop at Heron Hill and do a little
wine tasting. I remember riding the flat option two years ago in a pace
line easily doing 28mph with very little effort! Most people usually
stop in Branchport for some fluids and a snack. The cue sheet warns
this is the last store for 35 miles. The ride continues to north to
Havens Corners Rd and then heads back East to Seneca. If you are lucky
you will have a tailwind all the way from Havens Corner to Watkins Glen
like Terrie and I did last Sunday. 37.3 miles of tailwind! Wow! The
Century ride will usually catch up with the Half Century riders along
City Hill Rd or along Rock Rd. Triumphantly we ride back into Watkins
Glens for some post ride celebration. After the ride we will tailgate,
clean up, and some will even take a dip in the lake. This year we will
be eating steak at the Crooked Rooster Brewpub

The half-century route is an alternative to our annual Five Lakes and a
Steak Century .You only get one lake on the half century, Seneca, but
it's a biggy and if you look frequently enough, you might get five views
of it. To actually get five lakes, you've got to do the full century.
The ride starts with a long but not overly steep climb out of Watkins
Glen. After that there's a nice long downhill, then a bit more climbing
here and there and downhill into Dundee, which has a very nice diner.
>From Dundee a lovely, gently climbing ride up Chubb Hollow takes you
north into Amish country nearly to the Keuka outlet; then a short
eastward leg takes you to Hazard-Norris and south for the return. In
keeping with the Big Horn Velo route design philosophy, this ride is
mostly on smaller, less traveled roads, with short connections on major
highways only as necessary.
Cue sheets and topographical profiles are posted on the Big Horn Velo
website <http://www.bighornvelo.org/routes.html>
The same cue sheets with really outstanding maps (courtesy of Andrejs
Ozolins) are available at the Finger Lakes Cycling Club website
5 Lakes Century

Lakes 1/2 Century

Start times, Sunday 9/24 at the Watkins Marina parking lot, north end of
Decatur Street, Watkins Glen:
9 AM for the century
11 AM for the half century
We anticipate that this should put the century riders back in the
parking lot between 3 PM and 5 PM, and the half century riders at about
the same times.
Dinner is 5ish at the Crooked Rooster. Their micro brews are 5 star and
the food has been excellent. Here is a copy of the menu
<http://www.roosterfishbrewing.com/menu/menu.pdf> and directions
<http://www.roosterfishbrewing.com/directions.htm> for the restaurant.
Family and friends are welcome to join us for dinner. We need an
approximate head count for the restaurant, so if you think you are
joining us for dinner please email Bobby Nunnink at Rnunnink at
stny.rr.com<http://icycle.org/mailman/listinfo/bhv_icycle.org>
<mailto:rnunnink%20at%20stny.rr.com>
No need to pre-commit for the ride. Just show up.
