As an A/B+ rider I was glad to stay with the pink slipper race as long as I
did. I just recently made the jump to A's and would fail any 3 start rule -
every group needed some pack fodder so why not go hard and die early? I
particularly loved the midline early attacks and our anonymous motorcycle
escort (anyone get a name?). I knew when Andy started chatting just before
79, when I was pretty tapped, that I was due to be dropped soon. Still, I
resisted the urge to pull the heavy hitting bus riders up to Glenn on Ellis
Hollow. I wasn't at my limit at that point and could have managed an
attack, but would have been solo for the rest of the race if I used up what
I had too early.
As soon as the group rounded Hurd I fell off as the speed got turned up,
only to be collected by Steve Edgar and Bill E/Rhino. We collected one
other strong rider who's name I'm blanking on right now. Together the four
of us pulled hard up Hurd and decided to take the earlier right hand turn at
Hollister to make up time. As we bombed down the road we just missed a
group of deer crossing the road, but skidded around in the gravel to stay
upright. I think Bill may have some deer tufts in his handlebars. Coming
out on midline we just missed the chasing group of Andy, Don, Ryan etc, and
started to make up time down to 79.
At snyder Bill E. pulled away leaving as all about 25 meters apart. Steve
and the other guy (who later flatted I believe) were pulling hard to catch
me in second place in our little quad. Every time I could hear Steve
breathing hard behind me I turned it up more almost catching Rhino on the
steeper part of the hill. Eventually Steve caught my wheel and maybe heard
me swear not so quitely under my breath. I swerved a few times trying to
shake him off and figured he was stalking me for a sprint at the finish. I
found out afterwards that he wasn't quite seeing straight at that point.
About 1/2 a mile out he pulls up along side and says "let's drag for it."
I put down everything I have, as always not really knowing where the Snyder
finish is. Lucky for me Steve was spent and I pulled in ahead to see the
heavy hitters all fully rested by the side of the road.
Great season everyone, I look forward to leading more tactically stupid solo
attacks in the spring.
Cheers,
-Charles
