Anna,
Welcome to Cornell--er, Ithaca. Although it is difficult to imagine why the word would come up on a bike ride, it is easier to say "hypotenuse" than "the side of a right triangle opposite the right angle." Or a rope for hanging large African water-loving animals.
You also mentioned concertina wire. Since a concertina is like a small accordion, I think concertina wire falls into the same category as muffler bearings.
Raconteur: A guided trip for masked, ring-tailed mammals.
Cyanobacteria: How the Japanese say "good bye" to microscopic organisms.
I offer these comments entirely without feck.
Jack

Hi there,
I am new to the area but must admit to already feeling a bit intimidated by the email string most recently posted on this listserve.
Does one need a PhD from an Ivy League institution to ride with this group?
words like:
reconteur
cyanobacteria
fecklessly
hypoteneuse
hmm.... Most of my cycling friends in the midwest are completely literate and choose not to use words that make folks need to google "dictionary"
don't take yourselves so seriously!
