Hi all,

just a reminder about this Sunday's clinic- meet at 10 at the Vet School parking lot (corner of 366 and Caldwell). Will cover topics such as climbing, descending, and cornering technique, basics of bike fit, nutrition on the bike.... Will be geared for newbies, but all are welcome. should not only be informative but also fun- so come on out, even if you think you know it all, or just to help us out since a couple dozen people have rsvp'ed.

I had a great trip out to the midwest and EB (aka Jacob) was thrilled to discover he has 8 cousins under age 10. I didn't get a chance to check out the trails, but got some miles in on the gently undulating ribbons of road. For the first 10 miles or so outside of town there was a surprisingly smooth 5 foot shoulder! I guess this was to balance the 3 inch shoulder and massive cracks everywhere else- on which I almost did an endo when my aerobars bounced into a downward 45% angle (note to self- always double check the screws!). I passed the local downhill ski resort- the biggest "peak" was about the size of the last block of Buffalo Street so I'll never complain about the size of east coast akiing again! I think I climbed a total of 200 feet all week, which was a good thing since my derailler was revolting at having been crated and I only had 3 working gears. The thriving metropolis of Bemidji actually had a bike shop but I decided to just live with it. It was
incredible to be able to crank along like I was flying for miles on end! I must have passed about 30 different lakes over 65 miles, saw a bald eagle nest, several beavers, and a thing that might have been a mink or an otter. The riding and scenery was lovely, although I must say it doesnt compare to the beauty around Ithaca and I actually found myself missing the hills (I may change the name of that tune on Tuesday night!). I was going to ride to the start of the Mississippi on my last day but turns out my tickets were for Wednesday not Thursday so I unfortunately wasn't able to. I would definatley recommend the area for a touring/camping excursion, especially if you want to do boating, fishing, and/or swimming along the way.

Also FYI to all you jet setters out there, I don't know if I just got lucky, but I flew out of Ithaca and they didn't charge me for my bike box. On the way home I flew out of an airport even smaller than ours and they only charged me $25- not because of size but because it was over 50 pounds with all the gear I had shoved in there around the bike and my other suitcase was over the limit too. So maybe there's something else to be said about small airports...

  Cheers,
  Hobit
