I finally had a chance to drag the classical groomer around many of the
trails this morning. I wouldn't say the conditions are great, but if you
don't have the time to travel to places with more snow (Bear Swamp, Tug
Hill) then you might choose to give the tracks a run.
Dan Karig has been having trouble getting the snowmobile to wake up after
its long summer of sitting. If anyone has good skills with 2-stroke engines
and wants to help troubleshoot it, he will be back in town after the
weekend. In the meantime, since the snow is not deep, I can pull grooming
equipment behind my tractor with its wide, flat tires. Since there is
really no base under the 4-6" of snow, the ice-cutting blades of the
groomer (which unfortunately are not easily removable) tend to cut into the
leaves and other stuff in some places, so there is the occasional patch of
dirty snow (and one or two big rocks that popped up out of the ground).
So....conditions are not great, but they are passable, and we're starting
to pack things down to form a solid base. If Mother Nature cooperates,
things will only get better from here !
