Conditions at the Swandrome are similar to what we are hearing about every
other place....perhaps a bit too much snow. With the steady winds blowing
on the hill it has been pretty fruitless trying to make any good ski tracks
(except in the woods) because the drifting snow just erases any tracks a
few minutes after they have been made. I snowshoed some of the woods trails
to make it easier for the few visitors to cut in their classical tracks,
but until I have more time (like the weekend) I doubt if there will be many
trails that are exactly pleasurable for those who like to glide. For those
who prefer the quiet solitude and sense of adventure (not to mention the
heavy workout) of breaking trail in deep fresh snow....well, it just
doesn't get any better than this ! C'mon out ! I suspect the best skiing
to be found will be those places like Hammond Hill where many people will
have combined to break in miles of tracks.
We'll see how long it takes to get some mechanical equipment functional
enough to resume grooming operations. I'll certainly post it to the list
when skating conditions return. In the meantime, if anyone wants to help
pound down the trails at the Swandrome, on skis or on snowshoes, I'll
certainly welcome the company and the help.
