I have to admit to some satisfaction when the old guys can whup on the
young-uns..... (I know this is going to come back to haunt me when all the young
guys show up together and pound Ernie and me into the dirt...) Several of the
stronger regulars were missing, either due to holiday travel, or need for
recovery from the weekend's stage races, so there wasn't as much horsepower out
as usual, and with a smaller field there would be less room for anyone to
"hide". Old guys notice such things.....so Ernie Bayles and I kind of drove a
fast bus, occasionally with others on board (Scott, Nick, Doug, John, Mike,
and a few others at times) until the string got frayed and we popped loose. We
thought we were quite clear near the finish on the first race, when Andy M
made an incredible effort to bridge across the gap and make contact. Alas for
Andy, it was just in time for the sprint and he was too toasted from his
effort to stand a chance. Still, an amazing effort. I heard that (newly married)
Nick was largely responsible for keeping the gap within reason and launching
Andy. On the second lap Doug Carlson, Mike O'Donnell and I launched pretty
early and got a good gap (since many were toasted from the first go-round, and
others wisely chose to move down to the B's. The pace stayed pretty high all
the way. This time it was Ernie who made an amazing bridge, followed by Nick.
Again, Andy put in a hard effort at the end, but once again the old guys
prevailed. That last mile is very hard to stay clear on. The slight uphill run,
combined with the power of a chasing group makes a small lead very tenuous.
I'm always amazed at how hard some riders can pull in the final desperate
chase. People are nearing mid-season form. We should start to have some pretty
aggressive races soon. If guys want to get faster they're going to have to
start attacking more and learning that they can actually ride 35mph for a mile
and still recover to respond to the next counterattack... Just pretend we are
Danny !
