Hi all,
We had a good sized crowd out for the medium speed ride to Marathon on Sunday. A brief thunderstorm sent us scurring under an overhang in Virgil for a bit, but other than that it was a great ride- perfect temperature, beautiful route, friendly interesting people. Although, I think Steve had the right idea about going to the diner- the second half of the ride I kept dreaming about sandwiches and other articles of real food while trying to choke down energy bars. I also learned that taking off jackets while riding a bike is much easier on TV- don't try this at home! Unless of course you need more padding on your rear brakes. Anywho...We split into a couple smaller groups and got a little strung out on the climbs, but everyone was able to ride at a comfortable happy pace and we all stayed relatively close to each other with minimal regrouping. It was a looong ride, but everyone was still smiling at the end.
We definately achieved critical mass, so all ya'll out there who are afraid you aren't fast enough-- be brave and come on out, you'll be in good company. We only lost one person last week and rumor has it he made it home alive by nightfall. The only way to get faster is by doing. And its a hell of a lot more fun than riding alone all the time. Next Sunday is only 47 miles, although with a doosey of a climb (or two). We'll probably take the easier route, out Thomas, to avoid a couple little kickers in the begining.
Please please everyone, remember to ride prepared- especially with snacks! Bonking makes for a long miserable ride. Even if you are sporting plenty of calories in the bank so to speak, your body can't make a withdrawl without certain nutrients being available. If you have questions, email me.
  See ya'll on Sunday. Cheers!
  Hobit
