marilyn-
if people want to ride, then they should get out there and ride. The club is what its members make it; I'm just another rider, you don't need my permission! anyone is welcome to come out for any of the rides, even Tuesdays (although I suggest people have basic group skills before jumping into Tuesday nights mid-season (for you newbies out there, we learn & practice skills in April before actual racing begins)). I get dropped every Tuesday I can scrounge up a babysitter. But last year I got dropped two minutes into the warm up and now I hang on in the race just a little bit more each week. I hammer like hell, then when I'm off the back I either pretend to be riding in the time trial world championships or sit up and enjoy the beautiful view and sheer joy of pedaling along as the sun is setting and everything gets all glow-y. Eli has gone from hanging on with me miles behind the pack last season to winning C races and placing well in the Juniors all over upstate.
The point here- getting dropped is not fatal. And its not embarassing once you realize no matter who you are, there are always people out there faster and slower than you. So what. As long as you keep the rubber side down the worst thing that can happen is you have a fun ride with yourself (or with your ipod- I've recently discovered the fun of listening to books on tape on long rides. maybe I'll work on learning Italian next). Just carry a map and a phone. Do I get a bit lonely and frustrated sometimes? Of course I do. But I know if I keep doing it a couple things will happen- 1. I'll get faster and eventually stop getting dropped and 2. since I'm out there maybe some other people will show up too and we can join forces and either pace each other back into the race or have our own private sprint for the line and practice our race skills. OK enough rambling- the short of it is, don't worry about what others are doing or not doing and just ride. If you want to
invite some friends, then do so. Happy riding,
  Hobit
p.s. thanks for the race report Lilynn- you are my hero! keep up the good work!
