FLCC> Sunday Slow Rides vs. Moderate Rides

FLCCers,
I was in the frontish part of the moderate speed ride. My clock averaged
about 15.5 or so and I didn't feel completely wiped out like I did on a past
ride i did trying to keep up with the fasts. It wasn't that long after I
stopped in marathon that the last of the moderates pulled in. People
seemingly spread out, but in the end, everyone was within 5-10 minutes of
each other. Within the moderates, there are different speeds. I think the
key is having a few more regrouping points and an awareness of the whole
group to make sure know one gets dropped. Personally, i think that my
average speed (my comfort zone) tends to be 16+/- 1.5 depending on the
terrain, length of ride and my mood. If i'm averaging less than 14, I'm
often feeling a little too slow. If I'm averaging more than 17+, i'm
probably going to feel pushed (which is sometimes good!).
I think as more people feel like they won't be the only person on the ride
who can't maintain a 17+ pace, a larger range will come out and hopefully
more people will be able to participate in their comfort zone.
The other questions i have is the idea of group awareness. When I was in a
club in Iowa, each weekend ride had a designated "leader" who made sure
people 'signed' the release form, had maps, knew the rules of riding in
groups and introduced newbies to the group. During the peak of the season,
there were A,B, C rides. On A's the leader would stay with the slowest on
the way out and back,on Bs, they'd stay with the slowest on the way out, but
not necessarily on the way back. On Cs, no one was guaranteed that the group
would wait. Maybe this is a little complicated but I think the important
thing is to set the expectations for the ride such that people have the
confidence to come out.
