I'll third the suggestion for Lake Placid!  I was up at Whiteface
mountain a couple weekends ago for a downhill mountain biking clinic,
and after driving down those roads, I was really wishing I'd brought
my road bike along as well.  There are some amazing roads & views up
there!!  I was actually checking out some information about doing a
bike tour in that area yesterday and found this website:
http://www.adkmountains.com/adkbikes/default.asp with some suggested
rides (under Feature Rides) that looked nice.  Maybe check that out.
