My goals for the 4-5 race were quite modest--get some experience with this kind of racing and keep the wheels between me and the asphalt. I managed to do both, despite the onset of a heavy downpour, during which I removed my sunglass clip-ons--an operation that normally requires two hands or one hand with two opposable thumbs.

The course was littered with reminders of the mishaps of other local riders--shards of carbon fiber from Don's bike frame, Jim Metzgar's cheek, and part of a Twinkie wrapper (or was that on another course?).

I pretty much hung back in the field, just trying to stick on the hill. On the next-to-last lap, I came up on the right side near the front, mostly just to see if I could do it. I was close enough to the officiating crew that Glenn asked me to ring the bell for the last lap. After that, I just struggled to stick with the pack to the finish.

When we drove away from the course, we could still see Steve Edgar whizzing around the course, unable to break some mysterious centripetal force that had hold of him. He has now welded his steering tube into a fixed position that allows him to ride the whole course without steering.

Thanks to TVC for the race.

Jack
