My view was a little different. Together with Emmanuel, we called
for the same ride as the A's (2 fatboys calling for the hilliest ride
possible - go figure!!!). I opted to conserve over the first half of
the race - I knew what was in store and I knew how poorly Twinkies
climb. So I sat at the back of the pack with Dave H and Marko S
until EHS. Dave Heck moved up through the field to the front bunch,
being driven by Rob and a
newly-emerged-from-the-dark-recesses-of-our-distant-pasts Don
Anderson. Marko S was ever-present as were a couple of others. I
sat on Dave H's wheel, feeling OK and crested EHS as first
wheel. Then we turned up Hurd and it felt like a hammer was taken to
my thighs - I could barely turn a pedal. The front bunch slowly rode
away as I fought back the burn in the legs and made it up the
hill. Jack R and ARIDK-in-red were just ahead of me and I closed the
gap to them over the top of Hurd. By the Midline corner, the front
bunch of 10 or 11 riders were about 40 seconds ahead. By 79, they
were 20 seconds ahead. By EHS we were on their tails. I caught onto
the last wheel (Charles, who had dropped down from the A's) for about
20 seconds and then completely blew up. ARIDK-in-red stayed with
them, but Jack R failed to latch on - I saw him soloing up Ringwood
as I crawled back along EHC to the car park. Several A riders who
had also abandoned, where there (Donal, LowFat) when I pulled in. I
figured my poor performance was due to a severe chicken-wing
deficiency, so Trevor and Low-Fat and I decided to quickly remedy the
situation and administer a therapeutic dose of poultry.
Twink.
