FLCC> need help choosing a bike

Hello all,
I was wondering if I could get some feedback that will help me choose a 
bicycle.

I need a small-framed, quality, inexpensive bike that will be good for both 
moderate trail riding and pavement.

I will be riding the bike around Ithaca and also training to be a 
participant in the AIDS Ride For Life this September.   I also want to put a 
seat on the back for my son, who weighs about 40lbs.

I'm looking to spend appx $300.    Suggestions for good, local bike dealers 
would also be helpful.
