I don't know about bus. It used to be you could take bikes on the train
for free, and you didn't have to pack them, and they would let you
supervise where they went in the baggage car, but that was like 100 year
ago. A quick phone call would confirm.
If you UPS, you should really try to meet the size restrictions so that
you can get a reasonable deal. Unfortunately, most bike boxes (and the
bikes inside them) are just over the limit. But with some
modifications......
I'm sure someone has better info.
