Charles Hamilton and I drove to New Lisbon, NY for the Check Your Leg race Sunday. With Joe Bailey a "no show", it left the race wide open for the rest of the field of 27 riders on a great day for a bike race- sunny, 72 degrees with a moderate breeze. The course was 2 laps of a 12 mile loop with 2 significant climbs close together on the back side of the course. Two Cortland riders were there, Paul Eisele and Steve Sloan. Steve broke away right from the start and stayed away for the entire first lap. He probably had a 1/2 mile lead at one point. The rest of the peloton stayed together until the climbs began. My goal was to stay near the front as long as possible. As we crested the second climb, I looked around and there was only 9 of us. We chased down Steve over the next 6 miles and caught him just after the start of the second lap. Nobody was interested in doing much work for the next 4 miles or so. I was nervous another group might catch back onto us. At the start of the next 2 climbs, Cortland Steve attacked again, but was reined in rather quickly. Halfway up, TVC's Todd Sherman and Cortland Paul took off, chased by a group of 4, then myself with the other 3. Just before the top, one guy from our group bridged up to the group of 4. The 3 of us sailed down the backside of the course. Nobody caught us. I finished 9th overall, about 1 1/2 minutes behind the leaders. Paul came in 2nd with Steve holding on for 12th, I believe. Which wasn't bad after riding solo for 12 miles. Charles was 13th. It was a great event; only cost $5, the first 21 to register got water bottles, and there was plenty of donuts and soda after the race. The top 10 got their choice of merchandise. I won a nice pair of Pearl Izumi gloves. Thanks to Peter Martin for putting on a fun, well organized event. Dave
