FLCC> crank length question

I am thinking of putting a compact on my old steel road bike to gain some lower gears.? What if anything should I have to consider in regards to crank length.? I've been riding a 170 just because its what the bike came with back then.? I usually see 170, 172.5, and 175 mm offered.? I realize that without changing anything else the crank length affects leverage, but how much is 2.5 -5mm going to matter to me.
