Here's an interesting opinion on this topic from Copenhagen; he says  
you have to segregate bikes from cars.  However the segregation in  
the photos includes dedicated lanes on streets, unlike the sidewalk- 
like bike lanes that often don't go where you need to go that have  
been built in the U.S.
