Again, widening the road is one thing, making the road straighter and
essentially faster is unnecessary.

Interesting to read reason #4 for keeping the road to 28 feet:
"People live and bicycle in the Coddington Neighborhood for its rural
charm. Many of the homes here are historic. Ask cyclists why they don't
prefer riding on Route 96B where the shoulders are six feet wide...
because the traffic is too fast, they feel less safe, and it has no
charm. The wider the road, the greater the impact on the natural
environment, too, as trees and habitat are destroyed, and toxic
stormwater runoff is increased. "
Given this expressed concern about cycling, it is interesting to see how
many incidences occur during the TT season because of a lack of good
shoulder to ride on. If there were a 3' wide paved shoulder, I'm sure
that we would have many fewer altercations with the Willseyville pickup
mafia...
