Salmon Creek Ridge Ride notes 1-27-08

Dan Barbasch and I departed the Cayuga Heights Road Bridge over Route 13
about 2:30pm. We proceeded north on CHRd to Route 34, passed The Rink and
took the left onto Drake Road. Then left on 34B and right onto Brickyard
Road to Ludlowville. We proceeded north on Salmon Creek Road past Lockerby
Hill, Brooks Hill, and French Hill. Just before crossing to the west side
of Salmon Creek, we passed a natural gas well-bore site going 24/7. No
signage out at the road…those gas companies are so damn secretive. We
ourselves then bore left onto Hill Road at Fork in the Creek Village rather
then proceed due north on Indian Field Road. At the top of the ridge—heart
rates in the 170s—we proceeded into the Village of Five Corners, finding
ourselves to be 15 miles out at that very 5-way intersection.

In case Ben Bernanke doesn’t know it, Five Corners definitely should be
A-listed for that upcoming Economic Stimulus Package. This is one of those
parts of Cayuga County where there was more traffic on some of the roads in
1850 than there is today. The reason I can say this is the mile or so of
road that once connected Ridge Road to Creek Road doesn’t seem to be there
any more. In any case, the Village of Five Corners was celebrating “Let’s
Pretend We’ve been Hit by a Neutron Bomb Weekend.” Homo sapiens was not in
view; not a voice, not even a heartbeat in evidence. I did see one
ski-mobile track in a snowy field at the edge of the village, a single,
one-way pass (to nowhere?) at that. No hurley-burley Dickensian street
scenes to be found in Five Corners! No vendors, no shops, no pedestrians.
No Jokers, no court troubadours. Totally encloistered for the moment.
Bruygel would not have wintered here! We do wear those colorful jerseys to
be seen, right?

For folks who like a speedy, gently-rolling short time-trial-like course
with a view, the five miles from Five Corners south to Route 34B definitely
fits the bill. In view of the winter temps and our advancing middle age, Dan
and I did not turn on the after-burners but simply cruised the five miles in
the 16 to 25 mph range.

At Route 34B, we chose the “winter option” and rode 34B all the way east to
Rogues Harbor Inn (Alas, we skipped the Cappachino stop at Gimme!-Lansing
due to shortness of time) where we went right and then at the dead
restaurant took the Atwater Road jog over to Asbury and then took Triphammer
to the Y. The Summer Option (assuming one was not late for yoga) would be
to take the first left off of 34B and descend into Ludlowville on
Ludlowville Road and then retrace the out-going route back up Brickyard Road
to 34B and using Drake Road to connect to Asbury. I can see Andrejs nodding
with more approval except for the busy Triphammer leg.
