Well, thanks to Marcia, too. She was everywhere. One second she was
delivering goodies to the volunteers; the next second she was letting loose
unending streams of verbal abuse at inconsiderate motorists speeding through
the TT start zone. She was seen trying to whip that chubby-cheeked Spawn Of
Barker Aidan into action, but was unsuccessful. As far as I could tell,
that little S.O.B. did not lift one fat, lazy finger all day. After Glenn
and I took down the last canopy and I finally dragged my tired carcass out
of there at something like 4:00 PM, Marcia was still churning out the
official numbers. Thanks!
Jack

Subject: FLCC> ESSG Cycling Volunteers THANK YOU
From: Marciaswan at aol.com
Hi, all.
Thanks so much to all of you for coming out on a blistering hot day to help
make the ESSG cycling events a success. I got to speak with most of the
riders during the day, and from everyone I heard nothing but thanks and
compliments for the great staff we were able to field on the day.
Some of you will get this message twice -- maybe that will be sufficient!
But I have to ask Glenn or Mark to pass this on to the FLCC list (since I
don't subscribe, I can't post directly), and for some of those late to join
the ranks, I don't have your e-mail addresses in my file...
Jack Ruckheim, Lilynn Graves and Glenn went out on Friday evening to sweep
the course. (Jack had a vested interest in removing all obstacles, as he was
among the competitors on Saturday -- and he took home a medal.) Glenn
commented that they only had to move one roadkill, apparently a 'possum, and
in a state of such decrepitude that even Mark couldn't misdiagnose its state
;-)
Glenn got pressed into set-up duty and arrived with me at Greek Peak at
7:00AM, only to find a competitor already waiting... We'd thought to open
registration at 8:00, but by 7:30 we were pretty much inundated.
Dave Heck arrived early to set up the computer and stayed all day to make
sure our results were accurate. Glenn did his best to keep Dave's life
interesting by throwing in a few out-of-order and in-between-minutes TT
starts, so Dave had to wrestle a bit with Mark's new and improved results
spreadsheet to handle the variations.
Dave Heck Sr also arrived early and stayed all day, helping with
registration, running between finish line and computer with intermediate
results, and marshaling a corner for the afternoon RR.
Sara (and Aidan of the chubby cheeks) and Erin arrived just as the hordes
were overwhelming the registration table and took over there, then went out
to handle TT finish line duties for the rest of the morning.
Glenn and Andrejs handled the TT start line duties. Ernie was with them in
thought if not physically. In fact, a lot of people missed Ernie and
conveyed greetings and good wishes.
Corner marshals ably directed traffic, coached riders at the TT turnarounds
and helped count laps in the RR:
* Wayne Gottlieb (Worked all three events.)
* Jeff Dubois (Thank goodness you arrived with the coffee when you
did. I was seriously decaffeinated!)
* Dave Ruppert (Thanks also for bringing the FLCC stash of flags,
vests and cones to augment ESSG supplies.)
* Owen Bailey (Worked all three events.)
* Steve Powell (Worked all three events.)
* Vanessa McCaffrey (Fended off a few rude motorists with aplomb.)
* Bill Begeal and son Aidan
* Peter Blenkiron
* Dave Heck Sr (See above!)
* Don Ten Kate
* Ruth Sherman
Charles Hamilton drove the pace car for the road race.
Laurie Cuomo came out to race the TTs (and got some medals for her efforts),
but decided to forego the RR and instead of racing, she helped Glenn and me
pick the finish order. We did pretty well, except for the lead pack that
came zooming through in a big bunch. Dave chased them down and soon sorted
them into the right order.
Jack (after racing all day), Dave and Dave Sr all stayed long enough to help
us clean up.
We also need to acknowledge Greek Peak, for allowing us to use the facility,
providing tables and supplying ice for the drinks coolers, and disposing of
our trash.
Machell of the CRSC delivered our food order to the site on Saturday
morning. Riders really appreciated the caloric sustenance and liquid
refreshments. One woman commented that the ESSG running events didn't
provide food, so she thought she'd switch sports permanently ;-)
The ambulance crew and fire department were on the course to help with
potential emergencies. Thankfully, we didn't have to take advantage of their
professional services, but they were out with us in the sun all day anyway.
And we can't forget to thank Mark for dealing with all the upfront
coordination with the ESSG organization that made things come together so
well on race day. Thanks, Mark! But you still owe me a beer...
Thanks again to all of you!
