There are a few of us who are able to go out and race Tuesdays and weekends
without being too concerned about not winning. I am in this group because I
was raised at the opposite end of the spectrum than Ano. My parents hated
me. They condoned, encouraged, and rewarded failure. The worse I did, the
happier I was. So, if I sometimes get pummeled on a Tuesday night or
weekend, I am ecstatic. My dad would have been proud of me and then
rewarded me with a few doughnuts, then would have challenged me to see if I
could get dropped even harder on ringwood the next time. This philosophy
has applied to the rest of my life--I am a dismal failure at pretty much
everything I do--work, parenthood, husbandhood--but overall, I am really
happy. You just need to lower the bar.

Brian-

I enjoyed the write-up, thanks for writing it.

Although it is fun and entertaining to read posts from people like Glenn who
almost always fare well at races, they have the unfortunate side-effect of
making it look easy and causing you wonder if you are doing something wrong
if you don't win races left and right.

Of course I suspect part of my self-esteem issues come from being raised by
parents who loved me a lot but placed an overly-high value on succeeding.
Maybe others in similar circumstances would be happy to just have fun, get
exercise and be part of a great group.
But that is beyond the scope of this post.

Although I would not wish these bad experiences on anyone, and my fellow
riders and team-mates least of all, it is somehow comforting to know that
even the strongest fittest riders have bad days. And that they will bounce
back next time.

I hope this is your last bad day for awhile. Heal soon!

-Ano
