There was a goodly group milling about at East Hill Plaza, but Stewart,
Terri, Ben and some of our other faster riders were not present, perhaps
just as well, as the day was shaping up to be both cloudless and hot. I
suppose I can't blame my renewed interest in heart rates entirely on the
untimely and tragic death of Tim Russert, but we were born in the same year.
In any case, I hurriedly got pulse and oximeter readings from many of the
riders present, advising them that I hoped to track pulse and oxygen status
again later in the ride.
On the way to Moravia, I left Jason, Eva, and Rob hoping to catch the lead
group in McLean, but instead passed Anne Shapiro in McLean and found myself
to be exactly two minutes behind the next group. But on reaching Rte 222, I
had no cue sheet, so I then rode with Jason, Eva, and Rob on to Moravia,
during which time I made a shameless pitch to Eva about joining the Obama
camp. On arriving in Moravia, we found a large contingent already sitting on
the shaded pavement outside the grocery store, so I suggested a transition
over to the more appealing Old Creamery that sits on the NW corner of the
main intersection. (They actually have a sports drink cooler inside now.)
There I took more pulse and oxygen readings including those of a guest
appearance by Amy Klein, a lone cyclist from Skaneateles. Not sure if she
had been moving at a slower pace or resting longer or was just in better
shape than the rest of us, but here's how the Moravia readings sorted out:
Pulse Oxygen Saturation
Amy Klein 74 98
Mike Richter 73-76 98
Eva Tarscai 78 98 (Great recovery,
Eva, considering you were one of the "late arrivers" and you were drinking
iced coffee.)
Jim Millar 82 97
Misty McPhee 85 98
Jim McGarry 85 97
Don Tenkate 85 94
Mark Sorrells 88 98
John Dennis 96 96
Rob Fergeson 102 96
Shawn McElroy 106 96
Jason Stilwell 106 95
David Sahn 106 94
Garry Hodges 115 98
And here are a few readings taken back at East Hill Plaza at the start:
Lya Pohl 62 98
Clif Hood 68 94
Brenda Smith 98 98 (I'm thinking Brenda
rode to the start and the other two did not.)
Anne did join us in Moravia, but she was spared any biometric harassment.
Leaving Moravia, the smart riders proceeded south down Rte 38 to Locke and
the not-so-smart riders rode west up Long Hill. There was a nifty
ultralight plane parked in a hanger on the south side of Long Hill Road part
way up the hill and I for one dreamed of taking off in it, even though it
appeared to be powered by little more than a lawnmower engine. The
not-so-smarts regrouped at the cemetery that's just past the left turn once
we were headed south and the group included: both Jim M.s, Mark, Shawn,
David, Misty, Garry, Don, Mike, and myself. We then did some not-so-orderly
pace-lining with the wind coming from the West-North-West.
Bird most in evidence: Red-Wing Blackbird. Most prevalent flower: Dames
Rocket. Most prevalent scenery: windswept plain with dairy farm
As you may have guessed from this late posting, I slept for hours on getting
home-:)
Ride safe yawl!
