Inaugural Wilmington-Whitefac e Road Race

Team Placid Planet will present its first annual Wilmington-Whitefac e Road
Race on Saturday, June 21.

This is a challenging and scenic high country road race starting from the
Village of Wilmington, home of Whiteface Mountain. A 6-mile, steadily
slightly uphill on Bonnie View Road accesses the 14-mile race loop, which is
hilly, with two big rollers of around a half-mile each leading to a exciting
mostly downhill section of several miles, relatively flat on the backside of
the course, another big roller, a fast downhill into the hamlet of Black
Brook, and a one-mile hill that starts off steep and eases as you approach
to Bonnie View Road and finish the lap (feed zone near crest).

Junior 15-18 and adult fields will do one to four laps of this loop (for 28
to 69 miles total) and then return to Wilmington via Bonnie View again(fast
in this direction, with one short kicker uphill; any breakaways will need
plenty of time on the field to stay away here!), make a right turn on Rt.
431/Whiteface Memorial Highway and climb 1.6 miles up the first pitch of
Whiteface to the finish at Santa's Workshop/The North Pole. The climb is
mostly 8% but steepens to around 11% at the finish, so gear accordingly.

Young juniors (10-12 and 13-14) will race Bonnie View Road only, for an
out-and-back of 12.5 miles and a flat finish without the climb.

The first wave of races will start at 9am and include a combined Men's
Masters 45/55/Jr 15-18 race, a Men's Cat 5, a combined Women's Cat 4/Jr
15-18, and combined Young Juniors 10-12 and 13-14 boys and girls (all these
combined fields will have separate prizes for each category and gender).

The second wave will start at 12:30pm and will feature the Mens and Women's
Pro/123 fields as well as Men's 3/4 and Men's 35+.

Total prize list is $2500 plus merchandise and medals.

Please spread the word about our race to your members and folks you are in
email contact with! Everyone who has ridden the course is impressed with the
challenge, the pavement, the scenery, and the relative lack of traffic. We
are looking forward to putting on a quality race: your gas money will be
well spent. The High Peaks/Lake Placid/Olympic region is a great place to
bring the family for a weekend just before the big crowds show up, and you
can get a great bike race in too!

Sign-up is coming along on BikeReg and we are up to 56 racers as of today.
But we need more: please sign up soon! Pre-registration ends Thursday at
10pm; day-of-race registration available starting at 7:30am until 20 minutes
before each race.
