A staggering five riders showed up last night for the Coddington Road
TT. I mean the number was staggering, not the riders. A few more
started later, way after the official clock was started. The weather
was great--quite still, maybe a tiny tail wind at the start. There was
Liz, Don Smith, Charles Dietrich, Danny Timmerman, and me. You know the
turnout is measly when I'm determined to be next-to-last starter. I'm
sure you can't imagine who was last. Danny crushed the course in 18:07.
He was in full TT kit and riding equipment that is so aero efficient,
I'm sure he always has a tailwind. Starting 30 seconds behind me, he
blew by before I had turned my pedals over 5 times--after he was run off
the road by a car turning into driveway in front of him. Danny said it
wasn't malicious--the guy probably just didn't realize how fast Danny
was going. I would have to agree. I managed to catch three rabbits.
The first rabbit got caught quite soon. The next one, Charles, turned
out to be one of those Monty Python Holy Grail rabbits and bit back. We
traded places a couple of times before the end. On the way back, Liz
told me that she had seen black bears on the road on South Hill where
she lives. I think that knowing there are bears on the road has really
improved her time trialing skills.
We were all wondering why such a low turnout?
