Hi Misty, that was a really great point, thanks for bringing it up. The funny thing about drivers is that if another driver is rude and cuts them off or whatever, they may get angry at that particular one but then they typically don't become angry and offeneded at every other car on the road. On the other hand, there are a number of drivers who have had a bad experience with a rude, or perhaps just ignorant or not so bright, cyclist and then hate all cyclists. Perhaps hosting a workshop downtown for commuter and rec cyclists might be helpful? What are some other ways the info could be provided? Public service announcements/ ads in the media? I also think letters to the editor, and other ways of educating drivers would be useful. Drivers don't see to realize they have a very different perspective of road conditions and visibility being in cars than we do on skinny tires. For example, it probably just doesn't occur to them there may be a good reason (potholes, gravel,
off camber shoulder...) for a cyclist riding in the middle of a lane.
By the way, there is a new listserve (thanks Andrejs) for rec riders, commuters, families etc. who are not interested in racing, the link to subscribe is http://icycle.org/mailman/listinfo/familybike_icycle.org so please pass this along to anyone who may be interested
happy riding,
