Here is a money-saving idea.

If you ran the finish up the side of a gorge cliff, you
would have an easier time picking finishers and save
$$ on not having finish timing.

Along those lines, if you make the finish
REALLY hard, maybe no one will finish and
you can also keep the cost down by keeping the 
prize money!
