Helmets are debated in equine circles as well - some people think they
are just too goofy for words and refuse to wear them - more and more
events are requiring their use, however, and I wouldn't go out on the
trail with someone not wearing a helmet. Years ago I never used a helmet
while riding but when I moved to my current stable I was informed that
I'd use a helmet. I did some research and similar findings regarding
injury severity among equestrians convinced me that I needed a good
helmet. The helmet designs are specific to the typical types of falls for
the separate activities so I couldn't just use my bike helmet. In the
last few years I've been dumped by a horse (not mine) and briefly lost
consciousness even with a helmet but suffered nothing worse than a broken
rib - without the helmet, who knows? I crashed my mt bike a couple of
years ago and broke an arm - but no head injury, thanks to the helmet.

So far so good on the road bike....but I definitely wear a helmet!
