Four of my cycling buddies broke helmets while riding, and were glad
they had one on to break. One of my buddies from grad school days
preferred to cycle without one. One summer day, while on a downhill
run in top gear, a car turned left in front of him. He died that
night of head injuries he sustained upon contact with the pavement.
Anecdotes are not clinical trials, but common sense has me helmeted
for every ride. Besides, my helmet is a great place to hang my
whistle, another terrific safety device. I've used it often enough
to get the attention of dozing drivers and ward off charging dogs -
both of which I've had on intercept courses.
Keep the shiny side up and blow hard when you need to!
