This morning I hooked up with Wayne and a posse of Dewitt Junior High
students and faculty to bike to work. I met Martha Robertson at her
house on Ellis Hollow Road and shortly after that we found Wayne riding
along Ellis Hollow. Martha is a Tompkins County Legislator. She peeled
off from the ride before I had a chance to ask her to legislate some
maintenance for Ellis Hollow Road, a County Road :). Some of the posse
came from Brooktondale, and these kids were motoring right along. It
was pretty cool to see them out there. It didn't take long for Wayne to
whip this group of 12 or so into a tight, efficient paceline that was
better than the Bs at Brooktondale on a Tuesday night. By the time we
got to Dewitt, he had them sprinting for yellow diamonds. If you
weren't in the top 5, you had to stay for detention tonight. In case
you're wondering, they don't let Wayne in the school with those infamous
shorts on.

The real danger was not getting sideswiped by a car or its mirror. I
was more scared of getting taken out by one of Wayne's 3-foot wide
panniers as he went by me in the paceline.

At East Hill Plaza, we were joined by another contingent containing
Steve Powell and some more kids. Now we were reaching critical mass.
We had absolutely no problem from drivers. They waited patiently as all
of us went through the intersections en masse. The plan was to walk the
bikes up the steep, narrow Warren Road hill out of Forest Home, but
every kid voted to pedal. It was only Wayne who has having a problem
with the hill.

At Dewitt, Wayne loaned some lunch money to some dimwit who couldn't
plan ahead enough for lunch on BTW day. I then rode from DeWitt to
Bolton Point. Seeing the double doors open to the electrical shop, I
rode right in, and continued riding into the electrical office, where
the guys were having a meeting. I was still decked out in full cycling
kit. These guys around here think you're from Jupiter when they see you
in that stuff--"What the hell is that?"

Wayne--thanks for putting this together.

Jack
