Yes, the early suicide attack was me. After the race I was a little bit
short of fully aware and the folks who asked me where I took off (at least
Mark) got very vague answers. I've since remembered that it was shortly
after the first riser coming down Midline. I was hoping for quick jump in
pace and and to be reintegrated into the pack. That's not what I got. I was
suspicious that some organization was lacking near the front of the pack as
I stayed away most of the way down to 79 where I was caught by a few riders
(Abe? I don't really know you, but you must have been yellow jersey?). Then
the whole pack was on us. Coming into the corner there was a lot of braking
and I slid through to the front again, after seeing the whole group make the
turn I pushed the pace a bit again.
With just two of us going up Ellis Hollow I was very near to calling it
quits on such a foolishly early break, and drifting back to mingle with the
pack. The group grew a bit, but our organization was mediocre at best.
Coming up the bottom of Ringwood I was again tempted to mingle back into the
pack and give myself a chance at the finish, ultimately I couldn't resist
the challenge to stay out there though. As I asked how folks around me were
feeling the response was pretty universaly negative. Snyder seemed a long
way off. Again, as I was losing hope in maintaining any lead, the group
grew. We had a slightly more organized run down Midline.
With a lot of braking again in the corner things became somewhat
disorganized; it was briefly just Peter and I at the front, then our group
caught on, then the pack did too. As we approached Snyder I began to worry
that Mark S would try to promote me to the As so I decided to hand over the
leadership and roll in far behind the pack. Wayne and I had a nice chat on
the way to the finish after he dashed my podium hopes with a few well
directed comments.
Good ride all!
